THEME PARTY AND WEDDING
EXPO: AN EXTRAVAGANZA OF EVENTS IDEAS
It
takes nimble out-of-the-box thinking to turn the predictable services
expo into something worth a visitor’s time. How to transform
a market fair into a genuine market of ideas has become a specialty
of sorts for Maryjo Feraren.
Maryjo’s recently-concluded Theme Party and Wedding Expo (September
18 and 19, Wack Wack Golf and Country Club) incorporated several
ingenious ideas, veritable firsts in of this kind. While providing
the usual bridal showcases for marrying couples, it made the maverick
move of placing equal emphasis on theme parties, a growing segment
of the special-events industry.
“I wanted to show that fairs can be a showcase of unique ideas,
in ways that tie in with certain advocacies, such as arts education
and environmental consciousness,” says Maryjo, who, apart
from managing Greenbelt Shopping Plaza, has been organizing concerts
and fashion shows, fair and bazaars annually to help Filipino enterprises.
“Fairs are basically also networking showcases, and when you
hold a certain event that targets a specific group of people, you’re
expanding the market base for your fairs. It, in a way, makes good
business sense.
For Theme Party and Wedding Expo, Maryjo organized a Children’s
Sunday Entertainment (hosted by Clowning Around), to highlight the
various services and trends in children’s parties, a fashion-cum-art
show called Let’s Get Elemental featuring the underground
band Elemento (which makes its own instruments out of recycled industrial
materials) and the eco-friendly ethnic-chic designs of Twinkle Feraren
(made from recycled banana fiber and Mangyan weaves) plus the talents
of designer Kenneth Chua and the rap group T-Crew; and a Singles
Networking Social for Filipino-Chinese teens and twentysomethings.
The
Fil-Chi Singles Networking Social, organized in cooperation with
the Filipino-Chinese Women’s Federation, was a roaring success,
attended by over 350 single young men and women. The late-afternoon,
early-evening socials hosted by AMTV Raymond Steven, gave the participants
a chance to get to know one another through unique, fun-filled games
(such as Human Bingo, Seat Swapping and Bring Me…) designed
to encourage them to meet new people. The event proved so effective
at engaging participants to widen their social circles that the
organizers are planning a follow-up party in December and February
next year.
The formal centerpiece of the fair, the “Kasalan, Kasayahan,
atbp…” bridal show, presented the latest bridal creations
of the country’s top couturiers, including ……
Aureo Alonzo, Nolie Hans, Jun Jun Cambe, Barge Ramos, Patis Tesoro,
Dita Sandico-Ong, Joji Aguilar, Jing Chua, Exclusively His, Toni
Galang, Ole Morabe, Sabella, Frederick Peralta and Ben Farrales.
“Kasalan, Kasayahan, atbp…” also featured entourage
gowns, debutant and ball gowns by Occasions (from the Sabella Group
of Companies).
Theme Party and Wedding Expo was sponsored
by: The Plaza Catering, Sabella Group of Companies, Q.P. Designs,
Mildred’s Jewelry, Smart “Girl Txt”, Regina/Airborne,
