My Anniversary Present to W@W
by
Christine A. Icban, a W@Wie
WeddingsAtWork.com is a prominent figure in my personal life. I
don't remember exactly when I first read about W@W but it must have
been 1998 or 1999. I do remember that I read about it in a local
newspaper. At that time, I was busy pursuing my masters degree in
public health, my sister was getting married in May 1999 and I was
dreaming of my own wedding in 2000.
It was interesting to read about this Filipino site, at that time
when I had to visit The Knot, or Wedding Channel for ideas. I cut
out the newpaper article and tried to to access the website. It must
have been the slow dial-up connection that was very prevalent then
or maybe the site was still under construction, but for whatever
reason, I could not access the site. I would be reasearching in the
World Health Organization website and other public health related
sites while waiting for W@W to load but it would never do. All I
ever got was a blank page with a Weddings at Work headliner.
I stopped trying to visit W@W. First, I got busier with my masters
degree. Second, the marriage plans were put on hold until 2002 since
the boyfriend got busy with his MBA. I graduated in 2000, started
teaching in nursing school in 2001 and in October of the same year I
got the marriage proposal.
With the marriage proposal, W@W was right back in my mind. Since the
first few times I tried accessing the site to 2001, I was already
hearing more good things about W@W. Surely the site is now working,
I thought. It sure was. I was pleased with what I found out at W@W.
But in December of 2001, we broke the engagement, said goodbye to
six years of dating and went our separate years. W@W retreated to
the dark recesses of my mind.
In 2002, I met the man I would marry. There was such a flurry of
events from the time we met until we got civilly married in 2003.
W@W was barely rousing up from its two-year hiatus and I was already
married! However, the love of my life and I vowed that we would go
back to the Philippines and have our formal wedding this year. For
two years W@W was there, like a child, whispering, urging,
enchanting me to come back to W@W.
Now I am back. Dreaming my wedding, planning it with W@W, with all
the precious W@Wie couples here. My marriage plans may have taken
the longer and different route but there was never, never a doubt
that I would have planned this wedding with W@W.
Thanks John and Benette! Thanks and Happy Anniversary W@W!
